Dinosaur Woodworking is a custom cabinet and furniture shop that I began in 1999 in Eugene, Oregon. Though I initially started the business to help fund graduate school, it has since morphed into a mixture of cabinetry, furniture, carpentry, and concrete counters and furniture.

Products

I focus on building single-piece and small sets of furniture, and cabinets for kitchens, baths, and storage. In addition, I am a licensed contractor in Oregon and I occasionally take on interesting remodels and additions. In large part, I focus on smaller projects because I value taking on a project from the initial design process through to completion.

I rely on traditional joinery techniques to construct lasting furniture and cabinetry. I work closely with clients through the design process, and in choosing materials that reflect both an ecological and aesthetic sense.

Materials

There is a seemingly overwhelming number of material choices for the creation of furniture and cabinetry. And, though there are good options for "green" building materials, there are always trade-offs to consider. In general, I use:

  • Locally-sourced native hardwoods, salvaged lumber, and reclaimed materials.
  • Domestically produced hardwood panels (many that are available with low or no VOC, water-based glues); and, composite panels made from renewable resources, such as bamboo plywood.
  • Water-based dyes, stains, and top-coats; no VOC, hand-rubbed finishes; and when the situation requires, limited use of solvent-based finishes.
  • I do my best to minimize my waste stream; and, I rely on local organizations like Lane County Waste Management, NextStep Recycling, Bring Recycling and Rexius to keep the vast majority of waste out of the landfill.
